Correspondence 1919-1930.

This series comprises correspondence related to mission efforts of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States (JSO) with Mexican people living in the Rio Grande River Valley in southern Texas. The correspondence is from 1919-1930 and includes handwritten and typewritten material. Most of the correspondence is to and from members of the Texas District's Committee on Mexican Missions. For several years prior to their work being placed under the authority of the Synod, the committee was heavily involved in matters pertaining to the establishment and the administration of work among the Mexican people living in San Juan, Texas and surrounding communities. The main author of the correspondence in the Rev. Frederick A. Neumeister, chairman of the Texas District's Committee on Mexican Missions. Other authors include Mrs. Laura Mellenbruch, a district member very instrumental in the establishment of mission work, and the Rev. Albert Ell, one of the first pastors to serve in the Mexican Missions area. Subject matter for the correspondence includes efforts to call a pastor to serve in the mission area, invoices to be paid, supplies to be ordered, progress reports from the Sunday School, and personnel issues regarding volunteers and persons who wished to serve. Monthly statistical reports sent in by the mission are included as well as correspondence regarding a question posed to The State of Texas on whether or not parochial schools were exempt from a rule that only English could be used to teach in schools. Other letters refer to the contribution of funds by the JSO's Women's Missionary Conference towards the construction of a school in the mission area. Records of note include copies of calls issued to various pastors in the early years when the mission was trying to secure a pastor. Records are arranged chronologically.
